# Vibe coding: can you build an app without being a developer?

Describe an app to an artificial intelligence and watch it take shape: vibe coding promises to make building software accessible to everyone. What you can really build, how to go about it, and where the magic stops.

## The essentials in 30 seconds
- Vibe coding means describing what you want to an AI, which writes the code; you test and correct until you get the result you want.
- It is realistic for a dynamic website, a catalogue, an order form or a simple internal tool.
- Payments, sensitive data and large-scale apps remain a developer's job.
- The best strategy is often to prototype with vibe coding, then hand over to a professional.

You have had an app idea for months. A tool to track the orders your customers send on WhatsApp, an online catalogue for your shop, a small booking platform for your salon. You asked a developer for a quote, and the figure cooled your enthusiasm. The idea stayed on the shelf.

Since 2025, a new way of building software has been changing the game for entrepreneurs: **vibe coding**. The principle fits in one sentence: you describe what you want in plain language, and an artificial intelligence writes the code for you.

So, can you really build an app without being a developer? The honest answer is: **yes, for many simple projects, and no, not for everything**. This article explains what vibe coding is, what you can actually build with it, and above all where its limits lie.

## What exactly is vibe coding?

The term was coined in February 2025 by Andrej Karpathy, a well-known artificial intelligence researcher. He was describing a new way of programming: no longer writing code line by line, but **telling the AI what you want, looking at the result and adjusting course**, going with the "vibe", the overall intention.

In practice, you do not type technical instructions. You write a request the way you would explain it to a colleague: "Build me a page where my customers can choose a product, enter their neighbourhood and place an order." The AI produces the app. You try it. You ask for a change. And so on.

**The vibe coding loop**

1. **You describe**: The app, its screens, what it must do, in plain language.
2. **The AI writes the code**: Claude, Cursor or Lovable produce a first version.
3. **You test**: On a computer, then on a phone, like a demanding customer.
4. **You correct**: You rephrase what is wrong, one request at a time.

And you start again, until you get the result you want.

Your role changes: you are no longer the person who writes the code, you are **the person who knows what the app must do**. A bit like a property developer running a building site without laying the bricks: they may not know how to do masonry, but they know exactly which house they want, and they check that the walls are straight.

## What a vibe coding session looks like

Let's take a concrete example. Clarisse runs a dry cleaner's in Bonamoussadi. Customers drop off their clothes, and she writes everything down in a notebook. The result: lost tickets, customers calling to ask whether their laundry is ready, forgotten payments.

She opens a vibe coding tool and writes:

```text
I run a dry cleaner's in Douala. Build a simple app to track drop-offs.
For each drop-off: customer name, phone number, list of garments, total price,
amount already paid, planned pick-up date and status (dropped off, in progress, ready, collected).
I want to see at a glance the items that are ready but not yet collected.
The app must be easy to use on a phone.
```

Within minutes, the AI offers a first version: a drop-off form, a list sorted by status, a counter of the amounts still to collect. It is not perfect. She does not like the price format, and there is no button to send the customer a WhatsApp message when their laundry is ready. She asks. The AI fixes it. She tests again.

After a few hours of this back and forth, Clarisse has a working tool, tailored to **her** dry cleaner's, that she can open on her phone. She has not written a single line of code.

> **What makes the difference:** not technical skill, but clarity. The more precisely you know what you want (who uses the app, what information it keeps, what should happen at each click), the better the result. Entrepreneurs who know their trade well have a real advantage here.

## What you can actually build

This is the question that matters. Vibe coding is neither a gimmick nor a magic wand. Here is a realistic reading of what it allows, depending on how complex the project is.

**Realistic in a few evenings** (On your own, no coding)
- A dynamic showcase website for your business
- A product catalogue with WhatsApp ordering
- An order or booking form
- An internal tool: order tracking, stock, tasks
- A prototype to show a client or an investor

**Possible, with method** (Several weeks, lots of testing)
- User accounts with sign-in
- A database with several linked tables
- Automatic emails or notifications
- A dashboard with statistics

**Hand it to a developer** (A professional eye is a must)
- Online payments and Mobile Money in production
- Health, financial or highly personal data
- An app used by thousands of people
- Connections to a bank's or an operator's systems

Remember this simple rule: **the more your app deals with money, personal data or a large number of users, the more it needs a professional's eye**. A prototype to test an idea, yes. A microfinance institution's payment system, no.

## The limits, no sugar-coating

Many social media videos present vibe coding as the end of developers. That is wrong, and you are better off knowing the limits before you start.

**AI makes mistakes, confidently.** It can produce code that seems to work but contains a calculation error, or remove one feature while fixing another. You need to test every change, like a demanding customer.

**Security does not show on screen.** An app can look good and work well while leaving your customers' data open to anyone. A non-developer cannot see that kind of flaw. It is the main reason not to put sensitive data in an app you built alone.

**The code grows faster than your understanding.** While the project is small, all is well. As it grows, each new request risks breaking an old one, and you do not always know why. That is the moment you need a developer to bring order.

**The tools cost money.** The best tools are subscription-based, often payable only by international card. Budget around 13,000 to 16,000 FCFA a month, although limited free versions exist. A virtual card linked to Mobile Money gets around the bank card problem.

**You need a decent internet connection.** The AI works online. With an unstable connection, sessions quickly become frustrating.

**You remain responsible.** If the app loses an order or shows the wrong price, your business bears the consequences, not the AI.

> “You are no longer the person who writes the code. You are the person who knows what the app must do.”

## Who is vibe coding a real opportunity for?

**Entrepreneurs who want to test an idea.** Before investing hundreds of thousands of francs in development, you can build a first version, show it to real customers and check that it meets a need. If the idea does not work, you have lost a few evenings, not your budget.

**SME managers who need an internal tool.** Stock tracking, appointment booking, a team task list, a sales board: these simple tools are a big step up from the notebook or the Excel file passed around on messaging apps.

**Freelancers and digital professionals.** A community manager delivering a booking page to a client, a consultant showing a prototype instead of a document, a designer bringing mock-ups to life: vibe coding adds another string to your bow.

**People curious about AI.** It is probably the most concrete way to understand what artificial intelligence can do, and what it cannot. You come away with a much clearer view of today's promises.

## Vibe coding or a developer: how to choose

The right question is not "one or the other", but "when one, when the other".

| Your situation | The right choice |
| --- | --- |
| Testing an idea before investing | Vibe coding |
| A simple internal tool for your team | Vibe coding |
| Showing a prototype to a client or investor | Vibe coding |
| Online payments, Mobile Money in production | Developer |
| Health, financial or highly personal data | Developer |
| An app used by thousands of people | Developer |

And there is a middle road, often the smartest: **start with vibe coding, then hand over to a developer**. You then arrive with a working app instead of a vague idea. The developer immediately understands what you want, the specification is clear, and the bill reflects it.

## Getting started: five tips

1. **Start small.** One screen, one feature. An app that does one thing well beats an app that does ten things halfway.
2. **Describe it as you would to a new employee.** Give the context, say who will use the app, give concrete examples ("a customer in Akwa orders three loincloths").
3. **Move in small steps and test every time.** One request at a time. If something breaks, you know immediately what caused it.
4. **Keep the versions that work.** The tools let you go back. Before a big change, make sure you can get back to the version that worked.
5. **No real sensitive data in a prototype.** Test with made-up names and numbers until a professional has checked the security.

> “Prototype with vibe coding, then hand over to a developer: it is often the smartest route.”

## Why not give it a try?

The hardest part at the start is not the AI: it is the practical details. Creating the right accounts, paying for tools without a bank card, understanding an error message, putting the app online at a real web address. That is exactly what our vibe coding course covers: three evenings in Makèpè, in a small group, to leave with **your** app online, in your name. Sessions run in French, and an English session can be opened from three participants.

**The Honowa Academy course: [Vibe coding course: build an app with AI](https://staging.honowa-academy.cm/en/vibe-coding-course)** — Turn your idea into an application that is genuinely online, with AI, without writing a line of code. (3 evening sessions · 7 h 30 · 28,000 FCFA)

And if vibe coding makes you want to go further, to understand the code the AI writes, secure it and perhaps make it your career, the natural next step is the full web development programme.

## In short

Yes, today you can build an app without being a developer. Vibe coding lets an entrepreneur turn an idea into a concrete tool in a few evenings and on a modest budget. But it does not replace a developer for apps that handle money, sensitive data or large numbers of users.

Used with clear eyes, it is a superb tool for testing, prototyping and equipping your business. Used naively, it is a source of nasty surprises. The difference comes down to one thing: knowing what you are doing, and knowing where to stop.

**Know an entrepreneur with an app idea?** Their project may have been waiting for months for lack of budget. Share this article with them: in ten minutes, they will know whether vibe coding can help.

**Your idea can exist by Friday night** Three evenings in Makèpè, in groups of 5 people maximum, to build and publish your own app with AI, without writing code. 28,000 FCFA, payable by Mobile Money. See upcoming sessions: https://staging.honowa-academy.cm/en/vibe-coding-course

## Frequently asked questions

### What is vibe coding?
Vibe coding means building an app by describing what you want to an artificial intelligence, which writes the code for you. You test the result and ask for corrections until you get what you want. The term was coined in February 2025 by Andrej Karpathy.

### Do you need to know how to program to do vibe coding?
No. Above all you need to describe clearly what you want, test rigorously and rephrase when the result is not right. Understanding a few basics (a page, a database, an error message) helps a lot, and is quick to learn.

### How much does vibe coding cost in Cameroon?
The best tools are subscription-based, around 13,000 to 16,000 FCFA a month, often payable by international card. A virtual card linked to MTN Mobile Money or Orange Money lets you subscribe without a bank card. Limited free versions exist to get started.

### Is an app built with vibe coding secure?
Not necessarily. An app can work correctly while having security flaws a non-developer cannot see. For payments or sensitive data, have the app checked by a professional before using it with real customers.

### Will vibe coding replace developers?
No. It changes their work and lets non-developers build simple tools, but complex, secure or large-scale apps still require developer skills. Knowing how to use AI is in fact becoming a skill expected of developers themselves.
